Burning silicon
Aug. 7th, 2003 08:33 pmLast November, we got a shipment of new computers in at work. Not sure of the hertzage, but over 1GHz, I'm pretty sure. Windows XP, but oh, well.
Not until we moved to the new office did I actually get to use the thing. I did get to use the 19" monitor for a while, because my old one actually died, but not until about a month ago did I get the new computer.
Now, after a month of usage, it's toasted. Refused to boot up this morning, or even close. After a few tries, all you got when you turned it on was a blinking underline cursor in the top left corner. Apparently this makes three out of the four from the November shipment. There was a reason it took eight months for me to get mine.
Trying to transplant the nice big hard drive, with all my Java stuff set up on it, into a P3-450, didn't work. Setting up the P3-450 to even run Visual Basic, so I could work on a release of our older system, didn't work. Some weird problem with source code control. Reformatting it and setting it up again wasn't working when I left.
This was the worst kind of day--a day when I didn't even have the chance to be productive. I got to read a few chapters of a book on "Java Enterprise Performance", but mostly I stared blankly at install screens or hovered around while Edna tried to fix things. I could have stayed home and gotten more accomplished. For one thing, my computer might not have broken.
I swear, I will call in tomorrow morning, and if I don't have a working computer, I will stay home. I was planning to take a full five days off around Labour Day, to give some recovery time after we return from Toronto, but I can sacrifice one of those days to right now. Because I can't stand it.
