On Saturday I picked up a VHS copy of "Yellow Submarine" at the library booksale table. Tonight, with Nicole heading off to Athabasca for a schol reading tomorrow, I decided to sit the boys down to watch it.
Initially, Simon was unenthused, as usual with new movies that haven't been heavily hyped in previews or commercials that he's seen. (Like the Disney "Three Musketeers" movie--starring Mickey, Goofy and Donald and having only a passing relationship with Dumas--they watched last week.) But I used to play the Beatles "1" album for him, and he liked the "Yellow Submarine" song a lot, so he ended up, somewhat surprisingly, agreeing to try it without threats. I expected to have to try to persuade him to watch fifteen minutes of it, and after that he could ask for another movie, but he opted in unconditionally.
It's been a while since I watched it myself--I'd seen part of it as a kid(the "Nowhere Man" and "Sea of Holes" part, I remember), and gone to the Princess Theatre sometime to see the whole thing. I remember it being not really that much of a kids' movie, particularly with the "Eleanor Rigby" sequence, but Simon seemed to enjoy it well enough. Near the end, he would complain and ask to stop whenever the Blue Meanies came on, so perhaps it was a trifle long for him, but he giggled at a lot. The middle sequence, when they're en route from London to Pepperland, is still the best part. The whole thing is much more psychedelic and surreal than I remembered.
I'm not sure if Simon will ask for it a lot, but you never know. I didn't think he'd sit through it as well as he did.
