I'm Sorry, I Haven't A Clue
Mar. 9th, 2005 08:21 pmOn Monday I went to the Blood Donor Clinic, near the university, on my way home from work. It was just to update my records with the Unrelated Bone Marrow Registry, which I originally signed up for ten years ago. Apparently in the interim they've improved their tests, so they wanted to get the full spectrum of blood factors on record(I recall that previously they only did some of them, because the others were too difficult/expensive to determine for everybody).
My appointment was for 4:30, but I got there at 4:20 and was out again in about five minutes. They only wanted a vial, you see, not a full blood unit. And then, amazingly, I got home at about my normal time. Which made me think that perhaps, bizarrely enough, going by the university was a quicker route home than my current one. Both my current route, which goes through downtown, and my previous one, which went through the river valley, could get pretty slow at afternoon rush hour, but the university one was pretty breezy.
So yesterday, when I tried it again, there was an accident on 114th Street and things got held up for fifteen-twenty minutes. This can happen on any route, of course. Today I got home at pretty much my normal time, so it's probably not any faster. I keep thinking that if it only takes me half an hour to get to work at the end of morning rush hour, then it should only take me half an hour to get home at the beginning of afternoon rush hour. Somehow this never works for me.
But hey, I got to see a sun dog! I've never seen a sun dog before, though I read about them in Childcraft books years 'n' years ago. It actually looked like a tiny bit of rainbow, but try as I might I couldn't see any more of the arc. Suddenly I realized what it must be. It's hard to mistake it for the sun, because the spectrum was definitely spread out, but it was cool. I think I might've seen one before, but didn't realize what it was. They're supposed to come in pairs, but I didn't have a chance to look around for the other one.
