Allegory of Maternal Love
Mar. 8th, 2006 09:28 pmI did, in fact, get my new computer last weekend, Sunday morning. The one I'd been eyeing on the store's website turned out to be ready in 3-5 days, so I opted to put together a cash & carry system instead. Since it ended up at pretty much the same price, I don't feel too bad, and I got to take it home and set it up that afternoon. I didn't get it all set up before the Oscars, but mostly--I got the sound working later that evening, for instance. I even managed(with some difficulty, cussing, etc.)to install the 80GB hard drive from my old computer, which minimized greatly the amount I had to copy over.
It's a bitchen computer, too. I didn't take a good look at the case("Black Warrior" model)before I got it home, though I did notice that one side of the case was all grilled with some kind of pattern behind it. When I plugged it in, though, I discovered that the little pattern lights up in constantly-shifting colours. Luke likes it a lot. It does mean that unless I want it to make pretty colours to itself all night, I have to turn off the power switch on the back when I shut it down, which will take some getting used to.
It is missing a few things--a floppy drive, for one thing, but with a DVD-RW drive and a USB port for Syzygy I don't anticipate too many problems. Especially since my wife, once I've cleared off my old computer for her, can use that one, which has a CD-R drive and a USB port too. Floppy drives are as dated as 5.25" drives were when I last upgraded six years ago, if not long before then. It's a huge case, with three more CD-sized slots, and it barely fits on my desk.
It's been a lot of installation for the last few days. Mostly a bunch of CD games--I got the Sims Unleashed working on my computer, and, as expected, it starts up a lot faster and runs a lot better. I should try going to Old Town sometime and see how that works.
I haven't had time to try a lot of stuff yet, though I did go to Neopets. ( Cut for those of you who don't care about Neopets... )
One thing I was looking at last week but decided not to bother installing on my older computer is MusicBrainz. That's an online database designed to come up with consistent tagging for MP3 files, by musically fingerprinting them if possible. I spent a lot of the last two nights scanning over my MP3 collection, tagging it--I haven't made much progress yet, but then I've been going through my folder of mostly downloaded tracks, and I expect the ripped ones will go more easily. Still, I've been leery of making up a bunch of Winamp playlists until things are tagged properly, in case the files need to get renamed. Also, it's not the easiest site and software to use, but I'm sure I'll get the hang of it, or get bored and give up. Who knows?
My last.fm AudioScrobbler plugin for Winamp isn't working right now, annoyingly. It keeps giving me authorization failures, even when I got the right password into it. Stupid thing. I guess you'll have to wait to find out what I've been listening to this evening. Maybe I'll even listen to something using my CD player, instead of the computer! Shocking, I know.
