There's A New Sound
May. 8th, 2006 09:14 pmOkay, I know I've been sick, and this is a few days late, but how I can I skip
thefridayfive when they finally post my question?
1) Do you like your birth-name? Why?
"Aaron" has lots of things going for it--almost always coming first alphabetically, being hard to turn into an insulting rhyming nickname, and having two of the same letter at the beginning. However, it does present a number of people with spelling difficulties, when they either confuse it with the girl's name("Erin") or double the wrong letter("Arron"). But on the whole I'm fairly pleased with it.
2) If you could change your name to anything else, what would it be?
Given the frequency that I use it on the Web, I might be tempted to go for "Alfvaen", though only if nobody ever, ever shortened it to "Alf". I also kinda like "Rowan", though.
3) What names would you consider giving your children?
Well, I've already got two, "Simon" and "Luke". "Simon" was the name that my wife and I both agreed on; "Luke" was more of a compromise name. I've got long lists of names that I think would be interesting to give to characters, but not necessarily to babies. Some of my favourite girls' names include "Amber", "Natasha"/"Tasha", and "Jinian". If we had to come up with another boy's name it would require a lot of deliberation.
4) If you had a band, what would you name it, and why?
My answer to this question changes with great frequency. After all, I was once administrator of the Random Band Name Server, which contained tens of thousands of interesting potential band names, less than half of which were submitted by other people. Let me look at some recent favourites... "Eclipsing Binary" would be good for a duo. I also like "Squeamish Ossifrage", "The Cream-Faced Loons", "Seeing Other People", "Quaoar", "Expelliarmus"... Okay, I suppose I should stop there. ...Damn, I need somewhere to post these things again. They're not doing anyone else any good on my hard drive, or even on my USB.
5) Is there a name that you completely hate? Why?
For some reason, I've never been fond of the name "Jared". I couldn't tell you why--though it was a jock name at my high school, there wasn't anyone I particularly disliked by that name. I think maybe it's just how it sounds, ending in "-d". Though "Herod" doesn't bother me...oh, I don't know. I'm a fan of names, and there's few that I really dislike.
