Sultry

The weather here has just been abominable for the past few days. I miss the rain we had for the couple of weeks before that...but that may be contributing to the horrendous humidity.

It's probably mostly the house. When we bought it, the inspector noted that the asphalt roof shingles had been replaced after about half of their rated lifespan, and blamed it on heat pooling in the attic. We installed a "whirlybird" in the roof, and had the insulation stops checked, but it hasn't improved the heat inside the house. We have a ceiling fan in the kitchen, and sometimes we seriously consider having one installed in the bedroom.

Our living room window faces west, so it gets the evening sun. The kitchen gets the morning sun, but at least it has a window and a patio door that you can open. Another thing we consider--a pane in the living room window that we can open. The basement, at least, is habitable, temperaturewise, but with four of us down there it gets a little crowded.

And then when the thunderstorms start, we have to close all the windows so it doesn't rain in, and worry about it waking up the kids, and wonder if there's a funnel cloud brewing up there somewhere, ready to dip down and take off the roof. Another reason to stay down in the basement. I slept down there on the futon last night, and it was the best sleep I'd had in days.

Actually, we all slept in until almost 9:00 AM, and that's a minor miracle. Luke's sleep schedule was all wonky because he didn't have his nap until after 4:00. Sharna and Nick took the kids out to the Street Performers' Festival on Saturday morning, and Luke fell asleep in their car for the last ten blocks. After that he always thinks he's already had his nap, so doesn't want to take another one. We tried putting him down at 2:30, and it didn't take...and then he fell asleep on my shoulder while we were listening to Sandra Boynton's "Rhinoceros Tap" CD. He hasn't fallen asleep on my shoulder in ages. We woke him up at 6:30 for supper, and then put him down for his normal bedtime at 8:45.

It's supposed to cool down next week, for a couple of days at least. God, I hope so. Right now winter is sounding good. I want to watch the frozen lake scene from "King Arthur" on slow-forward. In the basement, of course.

Nicole's computer monitor has died. Her computer's a P-150 with Windows 95 that I got cheap from work a few years ago, which she uses happily because all she does on it is write. We have one spare monitor, but that's so ancient that it doesn't even have a connector she can use. We'll see if any used computer places are open on Sunday. I remember once before when we had only one computer in the house, and it wasn't pretty. And now we have Simon who wants computer time, too.

I'd love to use this as an excuse to upgrade my computer entirely, but that's not really in the budget right now. Ah, well. Dad got me some lottery tickets for my birthday, but alas, no payoff bigger than a few extra tickets. So the hope is not totally gone, but it's dwindled. Most of the fun of lottery tickets, of course, is getting to fantasize about what you'd do with the money...but there's always that letdown when I find out I haven't won. Because I can picture it in my head, so vividly, what I'd do, and then I don't have to do it.

I may not have to mow the lawn today, but we'll see how damp it is. I emphatically don't want to, but it emphatically needs it. Grumble. I've already squandered the cool part of the morning, such as it is. There's also the week's dishes to do, but since the dishwasher also needed to be run, I got to put that off until after lunch, at least.

I did assemble the second bookshelf last night, and took all the books off of the one I had to move over. I put most of them on the bookshelf that needs to be moved, but they're mostly Nicole's romances, and she might want to reshelve them anyway. It is something to do downstairs, but, unfortunately, it makes one sweat.

We watched "Bridget Jones's Diary" last night on DVD, and it was quite good. Renee Zellweger does a very convincing British accent. And I like her zaftig look. Yow. Wonder what happens in the sequel, though.

"Spider-Man 2" was pretty good, too--maybe a little better than the first one, but probably too close to call. It had its goofy moments, but it had its pathos, too, and plenty of action. My only complaint is that he took off his mask a few too goddamn many times. At this rate, he's going to be unmasking on nationwide TV in the next movie. And one thing that I miss from the comics, that they haven't managed to pull off in the movies, is the wisecracking. They did a good job on the fact that Peter Parker hardly ever catches a break in his life, but I always liked how Spidey would be chattering non-stop throughout every fight. Oh, well, I guess you can't have everything. That'd work better in Joss Whedon's Spider-Man TV series. Yeah, there's an idea. Mmmm.

Still haven't had a chance to watch "Angel" yet. Maybe we can squeeze that in tonight...though I did skip my writing quota last night, since we actually watched "Bridget Jones" all the way through in one night. Mostly because Nicole didn't have a computer to do writing on herself...

Nicole and kids should be back from grocery shopping soon...bless her, she let me stay at home to try to rejuvenate my "Fun Bar". (Get your minds out of the gutter--it's a Sims metaphor.) Hopefully life will improve soon.

Meh, the constant wisecracking in the comic book was just plain silly. The movie wisecracking was much more plausible.

I wonder if they're not afraid to do it in the movie because of the type of action-hero wiseacreage that Herr Gropenfuhrer and his ilk yukked up in the 80's and 90's. Maybe it would seem less like traditional Spiderman wisecracking and more like it was ripped from bubblegum action flicks.
