I have a plan of action now.
1) Clear space on my C:\ drive by zipping up stuff I don't need(my Sims data, which I left a copy of on C: after I copied it to D:, comes immediately to mind)and burning it onto CD. Though I quickly learned not to try to create a zip file which is too close to the size of the free space on the disk, I have managed to clear 1.5G on C:. Go me!
2) Find one of those data salvaging programs, or more than one if necessary, and copy some files off of D:\. These will be the ones whose lack I am sorely feeling, or the ones I am least looking forward to reconstructing, or, at least, ones that have been updated since March 11, 2003. Depending on the quantity, I may burn some of those onto CD, too.
3) Once I've salvaged everything I really, really want to not lose(assuming that some of it hasn't been lost already), then I'll try one or more of those programs for fixing up partitions or FAT tables or whatever turns out to be screwed up with D:\. With any luck, this will make 2) redundant, since everything will magically reappear.
4a) If it doesn't work, then it's time to reformat, once I've salvaged everything I could possibly need. Then I copy from my old backups and my newer ones, reinstall things I've installed, update my Cygwin installation(which will go back to ancient versions), etc.
4b) If it does work, then back up everyfuckingthing. Preferably organized so that the most frequently changed stuff is on one set of CDs, so I can back them up every month or so without having to screw around.
Ideally, I won't have to pay anything for the software, but I'll be willing to shell out for some of it if it works, and potentially sings its praises all over the place.
