I've been toying with the idea of moving my Concord Wiki(the plot synopsis/character list thing that I'm working on for The Wheel of Time and other series)onto a public site. Since I find myself still reluctant to pay for hosting, I've been looking into free Wiki farms.

The only one I've found with MediaWiki, which I've grown quite attached to over a mere five months of Wikipedia editing, is Wikicities. They are a little bit particular about what they allow on their site, too, and I'm feeling somewhat trepid about the submission process.

I'm not sure about licensing/copyright issues, too. If I do a chapter-by-chapter synopsis of a series of books, do I fall afoul of copyright? Is this way past the boundaries of "fair use"(or whatever laws actually apply)? What if I want to post chapter icons as well, which presumably are copyrighted by the illustrator? If I just do a list of characters, I'm sure I'm in the clear, but I want to do more than that.

The thing is that it's a pain right now, and deucedly slow, running it on my relatively pathetic Windows 98 SE 433 MHz. I can't load more than one or two pages at once without it timing out. I do plan to get a new computer sometime in the next year, but we'll see how finances shake out for that. With our two vehicles being a '91 and a '92, a new car fund might be in order as well. And I would love to be living in a larger house. (The actual process of selling this one, buying a new one, moving, etc., I would rather just skip over.) A lot of our plans are "If Nicole sells another book"(or "If we win the lottery", which I imagine is less likely but not completely impossible), to get a big chunk of ready cash. Going into debt(further than the mortgage, anyway)is anathema to us. But this paragraph is mostly a digression. To sum up: current computer slow, new computer desired but not inevitable.

There's also the fact that, when it comes right down to it, I'm not sure I want other people working on the project, even though I know that there is practically zero chance I will ever get it done working by myself. Oh, it's possible I may eventually finish the Wheel of Time series, and maybe A Song of Ice And Fire(if the author ever does), but I'm already thinking of every single book I read--The Paladin and the Gap series, for instance, as well as Xanth, Steven Brust, the Well World, Steven Erikson's Malazan Book of The Fallen, R. Scott Bakker's Prince of Nothing--as potential projects.

So I'll continue to bat it around. I welcome input from those who have any thoughts on the matter--and any potentially interested contributors, for that matter...
