It looks like I won't be getting my computer upgraded after all. At least, not from that source. Because my new coworker, whose former coworker I was going to buy the old computer bits from, is now my former coworker. After a mere seven and a half days working there, he accepted another job offer and walked out. It's not like we'd come to rely on him during that time--frankly, I hadn't had time to get any idea what his skills were--but it's annoying. Well, at least
raptortheangel has another shot at the job...
It's been a very weird August, weatherwise. Since last Monday, it's been cool and rainy, rarely getting as high as 20°C. We've had to turn the thermostat up so the furnace comes on once in a while. Three weeks ago we were probably still sweltering at midnight, with the windows closed because of thunderstorms.
We did have a few summers where it was so dry that the province was riddled with forest fires. After this year, maybe we'll have dampened things up a little bit. Apart from that, it doesn't bother me much either way. I've dug out my long-sleeved shirts and switched to my fall jacket. Hot weather may very well return again before we get seriously into fall, and I'm sure I'll adjust. As a basically indoors person, it doesn't really matter, except that the basement has been colder recently, and we haven't had to close the living room blinds against the later afternoon sun as much.
I took the bus today, though, partly because of the exorbitant gas prices(probably lower here than many places, but we've just surpassed $1/litre for the first time). Have to figure out if there's a way we can switch things around so I'm driving the more fuel-efficient car to work, rather than the gas-guzzling Jeep. It's tricky, though, because the Jeep has a)the better tape deck, and b)the worse facilities for strapping in the kids' car seats. For now I'll just have to live with spending $100 a month on gas...
A week late, we managed to snag Sharna for babysitting and finish our anniversary date. Last Wednesday we spent with the kids, eating at the White Spot and then going to see "Madagascar". It was an okay movie, not up to general computer-animated film standards but still decent. It had its moments.
Tonight we went to see "The Interpreter" in the cheap theatres. That one had looked like your basic thriller--interpreter at the UN overhears an assassination being plotted, and intrepid Secret Service guy tracks it down with her help. We were pleasantly surprised that it has many more layers than that--post-imperialist African politics, coping with grief, and loyalty, just to mention a few. There are still some very tense scenes, and a bittersweet ending. And no kissing! Since Sean Penn's character is very recently widowed, this is only appropriate, but still a nice touch. Nicole Kidman is great in her role--I'm constantly reminded how good an actress she really is.
I should do an update on books sometimes soon, but not right now, I'm tired.
