Prompts for Botober 23 are:
Invisible Hide And Seek
Ajamil and Taurinus, two invisible friends, were drifting through the forest when they reached a fork in the path. Ajamil said to Taurinus, "Let's play a game."
"Hide and seek?" said Taurinus.
"Exactly," said Ajamil.
Ajamil stayed behind and blanked his senses for a time, while Taurinus took the left-hand path, which led to a small cottage. After an interval had passed, Ajamil drifted up the path and began appraising the objects nearby. He would easily be able to sense Taurinus if he'd remained invisible, so he inspected a variety of objects nearby. There was a pile of logs near the side of the barn, and Ajamil inspected them carefully, but he eventually decided they were all real. The bucket next to the pile, though... "Aha!" Ajamil poked him with a tendril of energy. The bucket sprouted the bewigged head of Isaac Newton. "Well done!" it said in Taurinus's voice. "All right, your turn to hide."
They returned to the fork and then Ajamil drifted off the right-hand path while Taurinus blanked his senses. When Taurinus followed, he saw that the path went downward, and the smell began to be sulfurous. A small side path branched off, which Taurinus followed to a cratered basin filled with steaming pools of water. At the far end the path dipped even lower, into a red, glowing cave, lit by a red flow of lava. "Too easy!" Taurinus said, extending a tendril to touch the pool of lava. It rose into the air and formed into Ajamil, leaving an ordinary pool of steaming water behind.
"Another round?" Ajamil asked.
"No. But let's see where this cave goes," Taurinus said.
The two friends, invisible once more, drifted underground.
- Things: Two Invisible Friends
- Concepts: Lava.
- Advanced: Sir Isaac Newton in a bucket
- Terrible: Not an imitation of a pile of logs
