NaNoWriMo, Day 5
Nov. 5th, 2003 09:57 pmYesterday was a complete loss, writing-wise, and both today and Monday I'm coming in under quota. I'm at 5,559 words right now, when according to "schedule" I should be at 8,333. That's 2,774 words I'm behind, but considering I have 25 days to do it in, that's only another 100-odd words a day. I will be able to manage that. I don't consider it desparate until my daily quota goes over 2500.
Of course, I suppose that's assuming that I finish my novel promptly at 50,000 words. Well, since this is supposed to be part of a series, I can always just call that "End of Book One". Though it's nice to have some kind of book-level resolution, climax and denouement, at least.
I still haven't introduced Éogyd; I've just been going along with Tish. I was getting a little bored, and Nicole suggested I introduce another character. I did, and now we will have someone to give us some backstory on the whole Vortex thing. I'm still envisioning Éogyd's first significant event taking place long after Tish's arrival at the Vortex, but I keep waffling on how old Tish should be at the outset of the story. If this is pseudo-mediaeval generic-fantasy-land, then if I make her a reasonable age like 16, in a remote rural environment, she should be married with two children by then.
I'm not sure how much time I want her to have spent at the Vortex, I guess. But it can be a few years if necessary.
Tonight "The West Wing" is on; I got an actual fair amount of writing done before the kids' bedtime, since I was under 4500 words on Monday. But after putting the kids to bed(by myself, because Nicole was doing some aquatic exercise thing with her sister), I had no gumption left, so here I am. At least I managed to persuade myself not to start another game of Space Empires III.
The writing is going fairly easily once I actually sit down to it; it's just getting myself motivated to get started in the first place. I almost blew off Monday entirely, and I did end up getting at least some writing done. Hopefully the month will shake out a bit better from here on, without clustering social events.
My mom and stepfather have bought a new pickup truck, so they're giving us their old jeep. It's not a Jeep, just a jeep; I forget the precise make and model, though it is in the Dodge/Chrysler family. They said they could only get a $500 trade-in on it, and a second vehicle would indeed be a great boon to us. It would've come in handy before Nicole drove down to Medicine Hat, actually, but no looking a gift horse in the mouth.
Unfortunately, we have to jump through a few hoops--getting the insurance for the thing, so we can register it, so we can get a license plate...and then, we have to go drive out to Westlock, a little bit north of Edmonton, to pick the thing up. Because that's where they bought the truck, and they can't split up and drive two vehicles because a)they don't have time before they leave, and b)my Mom mashed up one of her fingers, and can't really drive with the huge bandage she has on it. She could barely sign the "Bill of Sale" we drew up.
But it'll be nice to have the second vehicle. I'll end up driving the jeep to work, because it doesn't have a car-seat anchor for Luke's seat, but it does have a tape deck which may even be working better than the stupid thing in the car. I'm looking forward to it. (Though the car tape deck works better in the winter than in the summer, it seems...)
A couple more quick things. I haven't been doing a lot of CD reviews, but a couple of good, wishlist-quality CDs I listened to this week were the Bangles reunion album, "Doll Revolution", and the soundtrack to "Brokedown Palace". The Bangles album was much better than the reviews I'd read of it, and certainly better than their last studio album, "Everything". The soundtrack I picked up because it had a few artists I liked, like Nelly Furtado, PJ Harvey, and Delerium; their songs are great, and the rest of the album, mostly by artists I'd never heard of, was really good too. This means that the movie probably sucks, since that's the general rule with decent soundtracks...
Anyway, time to go watch TV.
