Octopus's Garden
Nov. 8th, 2004 11:49 pmStill grinding away on the novel--up to 12,400 words, so almost 1/4 of the way through. It is a little more than 1/4 of the way through November, of course.
Well, I blew off yesterday, after a busy afternoon spent washing dishes and wandering around West Edmonton Mall with my mom(who was staying at the Fantasyland Hotel)and the kids. (And Nicole, too.) We took the Submarine Ride, which was the major attraction for the boys, rabid "Yellow Submarine" fans that they are. And it was actually not lame! They have all sorts of fishtanks and such which you can see through the portholes, some of them containing quite sizable fish(nurse sharks, for instance), as well as the sea lion tank(replacements for the dolphins, I imagine), scuba divers goofily waving to us, and the ruins of the Lost City of Atlantis. Simon and Luke did enjoy it quite a bit. Simon was a bit draggy as we continued through the mall, though, wanting to just go back to the hotel room(where he had lots of fun jumping between the beds, back and forth and back and forth).
Nonetheless, we went into the whale's mouth, looked at a lot of fountains, and finally got him into "Kites & Other Delights". I remember that store as "the place to go to get D&D books" when I was a kid, but I didn't see any in there this time. Lots of other neat stuff, though. That "Settlers of Catan" game looks interesting, for instance. The kids were more interested such things as the castle kit(quite pricy!), the plastic swords(they're also into swordfighting right now), and the wind-up toys.
We had a somewhat delayed dinner at Tony Roma's, since my stepfather's meeting ran late. The boys then ran around the hotel room for a while, and then we packed them off home. It actually snowed yesterday, just when the batch of snow we had a few weeks ago had almost completely disappeared. Just a little skiff, which has already mostly melted.
I'd managed about 380 words in between dishes earlier in the day, but when we got home after that I just wanted to veg out, so I played Sims instead of writing. It's only another 50-some words on the daily quota, at this point, which is why it's best to blow off days early on, when you have more days to spread the quota among. By the 20th, it'll be writing every day, no matter how little I feel like it.
I should do a reading update soon, but not tonight, methinks.
