Simon had a fever last weekend, without an associated ailment we could notice. He did claim a sore throat, but after a day or so his fever went down, though he was still feeling listless, and not eating much. But this is Simon, and he never does eat that much.

Then Luke got the fever thing a couple of days ago. With him it was a little more unsettling, because it was up to almost 103°F at one point. (Yes, I do body temperature in Fahrenheit, despite doing everything else in Celsius. A foolish mind is the consistency of small hobgoblins.) The first day of that was more worrying, but the next day it went down a little bit. But he didn't want to eat very much, either, because he kept saying, "I hurt my mouf!" He's been known to bite his tongue and cheeks, like the rest of us, from time to time, so we didn't think much of it.

The next day, Nicole took him to the doctor's office. And apparently it was not just a bitten cheek--it was blisters. It was, in fact, a fun little viral disease called "hand-foot-mouth disease". (Possible relationship to "hoof & mouth" unknown.) Basically, it means lots of little spots on hands, feet, and other places, and sore blisters inside your mouth. Eww. And this is almost certainly what Simon had, too.

So, as a result, Luke had been miserable a lot the last couple of days. Especially when he tries to eat. We haven't found a lot of things that he will actually eat. Tonight we were at a restaurant(for my mom's birthday), and there it was a real deuce of a time. He didn't like the bread(which was a little dry), we couldn't get him to eat the soup, and forget, say, dipping one in the other. They had no pudding or anything like that. And he won't drink that much, either. Poor kid.

Simon had about three glasses of iced tea(usual for restaurant visits), and a couple of "Dino Buddies"(the chicken-fingery things that are one of the few meat products he will actually eat...as long we don't tell him it's chicken). But then, after that, he didn't want any of the chocolate layer birthday cake. That should've been our first warning... When we were leaving, he didn't want to do up his jacket, because he said he felt sick.

In the car, on the way home, just after we turned onto the Whitemud freeway, he threw up. Voluminously. All over the back seat of the car. Not having many options, we gritted our teeth and continued driving home. It only take about ten-fifteen minutes on the Whitemud, but it was still not fun. Then we took everything else inside, put Simon in the entryway and took off all of his soiled clothes(everything but underwear, really). Nicole went out and tried to scrub out the back seat. It was quite dark, of course, but at least it's not that cold tonight.

We're not sure what it was, if this is the same virus(which is not supposed to make you throw up), or if this is a completely different illness(but remember what Dr. House said last week--two unrelated illnesses at the same time is multiplying unlikelihoods), or if it was just something he ate(but he didn't eat much!)or drank(but I had iced tea, too!). We just hope that this does not turn into one of those fun child-throwing-up-all-night kind of nights. At least Simon is old enough to know how to sit up and use a bucket. Not like the last Luke vomitfest. (Shudder.)

This is the life, innit?
