So, I finished backing up my hard drives onto CDs. I ran out of CDs with a bunch of MP3s left, so I went out and got some more today--a box of 5 CD-RWs and 10 CD-Rs for good measure. Turns out the CD-RWs won't work in my CD burner, for some reason. Well, at Radio Shack there were two types--"2x-4x", and "16x-24x". My burner can write to RWs at 10x, and I foolishly thought that the latter type would work. Apparently it can't read them at all. <grump/> This being me, I won't bother trying to take them back, because hey, I'll probably get a computer one of these days that has a drive that can handle them. Of course, these days computers all come with DVD writers, don't they? I saw DVD-RW's at Zellers, but they didn't even stock CD-RW's anymore. ...Whatever. So I just backed them up onto CD-Rs.

Finally, having backed everything up, I ran the scandisk. Almost to completion--the boys came downstairs when there was probably about 15 minutes left, and at some point Luke whacked the keyboard with a plastic bowling pin and the window went away. Either it was finished(which I don't think it was, because the "last date scanned" is still 1331 days in the past), or Luke managed to hit the Escape key or something. But there were no errors. And I tried ripping the same CD to another drive, and got the error, so after all that, I think it wasn't the hard drive at all.

The CD in question does, of course, happen to have a circular scratch on it, which I gather makes CD players have a really hard time reading the things. How does one get a concentric scratch on a CD, anyway? I can see random scratches, which could go in any direction across the disc, but what about the ones that are in exactly the groove that a CD is trying to read? Do some people have CD players with little sharp bits of metal sticking up in them? Well, it's a mystery.

Well, at least it got me to back up my computer, eh?
