My mom's in town for most of the week, staying with us. Nicole's sister, a week past her due date, went into the hospital Tuesday morning to get induced, but by the evening she was still showing no progress, so we decided to risk it and go out to a movie.

We went to see "A Series of Unfortunate Events". While I'm still not quite sure about the whole thing about turning three books into one movie, and Jim Carrey is enough to give one pause these days, it was okay. I was worried when they seemed to be skipping the whole last half of the first book, but instead they decided to put it after the end of the third book. Whatever.

Carrey was...well, not restrained, certainly, but mostly appropriate to the part. And the young actors were great. I couldn't remember who was supposed to be playing Uncle Monty, so I guessed John Cleese, even though I knew that wasn't quite right. But it was Billy Connolly. Still, the resemblance was uncanny.

They also seemed to be introducing all this ongoing plot stuff that I totally don't remember from the books--the spyglass, and all that stuff. Unless it got worked into the stories after book four(as far as I've read)and they're retconning it back in...

The best of the movie, I'd have to say, was the closing credits, and I don't mean that in a bad way. For some reason, they decided to start the movie with a fake puppet-animated movie, "The Littlest Elf", before lifting the needle and admitting that we were not going to see a nice movie like that. That was somewhat appropriate to the whole Lemony Snicket thing(the authorial voice was, of course, provided by Jude Law)s, and they even mentioned the elf a few times in the movie.

So what would otherwise have been the opening credits got shoved to the end, as often happens. But they were absolutely delightful. Paper-cutout animation, in a very Edward Gorey style, of the three kids in peril and fleeing from Count Olaf, set to the most enchanting music. I will seriously have to look for the soundtrack now.

Oh, and on Wednesday afternoon, Asha Polard(middle names still under negotiation, I think)came into the world by the section of Caesar. My first niece(or nephew), through marriage or otherwise. (If this was Liavek, Asha'd be in a good position to bind her magic during her luck time...) We haven't seen her yet, and I might not have a chance to until they take her home. 72 hours in the hospital is standard after a C-section, and the next few days are a wee bit hectic.
