Short, random updates:

My brother Steve is in town, visiting Edmonton as part of a reading tour promoting his poetry book, Blue Angels. He's been in Toronto for about eleven years now. Gadzooks, it doesn't feel that long, somehow. He's been more or less staying with us since the 4th, the evening of which he did his reading in Edmonton. Which was sparsely attended, but musically accompanied to good effect. He'll be here until Thursday. My mom and stepdad are also in town, which is nice.

We got a new toilet upstairs. Actually the upstairs and basement toilets were both working very suboptimally, so we called the plumbers in; they could fix the basement one, but the upstairs one we needed to replace. We bought a new one at Home Depot, and then got them to install it for us, though it took them over a week to get around to us. They also installed that programmable thermostat we bought over a month ago but chickened out on doing ourselves. Unfortunately, we can't figure out how to tell it when "night" starts--it's preset for 10:00-6:00. I often stay up until 11:30-12:00, so I guess I'll just get used to it being cold when I do. We're saving energy, though, right?

Both kids are sick right now--Simon starting to get over it, and Luke still in the midst of it. Nicole and I haven't succumbed yet, though I don't know for how long. Luke's been sleeping an awful lot, which is good because his normal crankiness is magnified a dozenfold when he's sick. He's scared of credits these days--when the movie or TV show ends, he immediately leaps up and screams for us to shut off the TV. Not sure how that happened. He must just feel like he really, really needs closure.

Hopefully Donna is back on the West Wing. Her long-postponed romance with Josh can begin to blossom any episode now, especially if she manages to get a position which is now actually subordinate to him. Fingers crossed... We watched another episode of "Firefly"...and bought two seasons of "Angel" on DVD. Well, seriously, HMV had them on 2/$80...when a single season was $84.99. Reading the Buffy criticism book has made me curious about Angel Season 2, and so I basically picked up Season 3 for free. Now we just have to finish the other two Whedon seasons we're in the middle of...

Finished Olympos, and while it was interesting, I still wasn't that impressed compared to the Hyperion books. The whole setup didn't seem to gel as much, for one thing. When I finally finished it on the weekend, I didn't want to start anything too long because of the incipience of A Feast For Crows, so I went on to Proof by Dick Francis. That one was really good, one of his better ones, I'd say. I finished it Monday night, though, so Tuesday(there being no bookstores open at 8:30 on my way to work)I read Blue Angels instead. Yes, that's right, my brother's poetry collection. I actually got a copy of it a long time ago, but could never find it when I was actually interested in reading it, and on Friday I found out that that was because my dad had borrowed it, and then lent it to someone else...who was, luckily, at the reading too. I got halfway through it, though I have to say I enjoyed listening to it better, because I am really bad at reading poetry. It just doesn't gel for me, or something.

And now I have A Feast For Crows, and am halfway into the first chapter. I am already forewarned that this is missing half of the characters, and hopefully that won't spoil it too bad for me. While I confess I am strongly interested in Arya, Jon and Dany, I guess I'll have to settle for Tyrion, Sansa, and whoever else Mr. Martin sees fit to grant viewpoint chapters to. (The first chapter is Aeron "Damphair" Greyjoy, for instance...)

My wiki is in a bit of turmoil right now, as somebody has started up a Wheel of Time wiki, on Wikicities no less, and we're trying to figure out how to deal with my Wheel of Time pages. I'd be perfectly happy to just leave them to do their own thing, but they seem to think that duplication is bad(and the Wikicities sysops seem to agree). So I haven't done a damn thing on there in a couple of weeks, because I'm all conflicted. Maybe I should just keep doing what I've been doing, and let them figure out how they want to sync it with their site. I don't want to get too totalitarian on the wiki, but yet, it feels like my site--I'm the one who's spent months working on it, years if you include the synopses I wrote(and lost)before starting the wiki. It's not like I'm not duplicating the efforts of other people who've put up other WOT sites. They do have some good ideas, but I'm almost set enough in my ways that I don't want to change my pages just to be like theirs. I don't want to have to make this decision, frankly--I just want to be able to work on my project by myself, even though I know that likely means that I'll never finish it.

So I've been avoiding the issue, playing Civ II and stuff instead. Oh, and not really doing much writing, either.
