Never Promise Anything Again
Apr. 6th, 2010 10:04 pmI apparently broke the hot-water tap handle in our bathtub last week. It was dripping the other night, so I turned it as hard as I could to turn it off. It worked, to the extent that it stopped the dripping, but it also has stopped the handle from turning back in the direction that would allow water to drip, let alone run. The handle would turn, but whatever the handle was attached to was not turning. I even unscrewed the handle entirely and got some WD-40 and some pliers, and I still couldn't get it to turn. This was on Wednesday, I think, with one day before the long weekend, so of course there was no question of being able to get a plumber out there to fix it. Disgruntled, I washed my hair over the kitchen sink.
Now, I've never been fond of showers. I never took them as a kid, except the one summer I was taking that six-week course at JHU/CTY at ASU, and I never got used to them. Baths are the thing. I used to read books in them, though I gave that up at some point. They're comfortable and warm. Showers are uncomfortable, you have to stand up, and whatever part of me is not directly under the spray gets cold.
My mom's house, which, as I said, we visited at Easter, has no bathtub. They expanded the house a few years ago, adding on a sun room, a new bedroom, and a new bathroom, and the new bathroom has...a larger shower. Sometimes I feel discriminated against by the shower people. Anyway, I made use of her shower while we were there.
Our house has a shower in the basement. When the house inspector looked at it, he pointed out that not only was it too close to the light fixture in the bathroom, but it also narrowed the laundry nook to only allow a stacked washer/dryer combination, and also keeps the circuit breaker panel door from swinging all the way open. This morning was the first time I've actually used it. The basement bathroom is not the cleanest in the house, and I'm not sure that all the spiders whose old webs you can see in the ceiling and behind the toilet are gone. It's annoying and inconvenient to have to use it, but I guess it gets the job done. And it's quick; I have to say that for showers, they take less time. That's the only possible advantage I can see in them.
The plumber has taken a look at it now, and...maaaybe this weekend. We'll see. Sigh.
Went to the dentist today. After getting a call a few weeks ago to remind me of my 8:00 AM appointment that day...I don't recall ever booking an 8AM appointment, and wonder if I really would have, or what, but I couldn't keep that one, so I rebooked for today. Mostly good, except that my gums are really receding in a few places (me brush too hard, expose root), I have a chip on one front tooth that they want to fill in, a couple of rough spots they want to smooth, and I may get molded for something I can put in my mouth at night to keep from grinding my teeth, as apparently I often do. So next week I get to go back.
