From [livejournal.com profile] thefridayfive:

1) who was your favourite band/musician when you were younger?

Depends on what you mean by "younger". Before my wider musical awareness coming in 1985, with the discovery of MuchMusic, I listened to a lot of ABBA, and a lot of Queen, with a little bit of Beatles, Paul McCartney, Weird Al Yankovic, and a number of musicals. For the sake of these questions let me pick Queen. They were all my brother's albums, but he let me listen to them anyway.

2) why?

On my then-favourite album of theirs, "A Night At The Opera", they had a wide range of styles, from the hard rock of "I'm In Love With My Car"(which made me vaguely uncomfortable)and "Sweet Lady" to the mellower tones of "Seaside Rendezvous" and "Good Company". But I liked best the science-fictional tones of "The Prophet" and "'39". Their albums weren't always so diverse, but there was a good variety, and they weren't afraid to tackle fantastical themes while keeping a good rock beat going--on the prog-rock side of arena rock, I'd guess. And they could always pull off a fantastic harmony.

3) are they still your favourite/one of your favourites?

After "Hot Space", which was the last one my brother bought(for the sake of the David Bowie collaboration, I'd bet), I didn't get into their stuff as much, but a lot of their songs and albums still hold up. They've been eclipsed by many newer albums in my collection, but I still like them.

4) what is your favourite of their songs?

These days, it may well be "'39", which may be the only relativistic folk song I've ever heard...though it was years before I picked up on that. "Fat Bottomed Girls" is, despite its raunchy tone, what I consider to be one of the perfect rock songs.

5) are there any specific lyrics you hold dear?

Lyrics? I was never as strongly into the lyrics as the music. While I like the lyrics of "'39", they don't really resonate with me personally, and "Fat Bottomed Girls" is just shameful, really.

I supposed if I had to pick, it would one of my relatively later discoveries of theirs, "Funny How Love Is", which is from "Queen II". I never listened to their first two albums much as a kid, because they were too far into the prog-rock for me, or something. But this one has grown on me:

Funny how love is everywhere just look and see
Funny how love is anywhere you're bound to be
Funny how love is every song in every key
Funny how love is coming home in time for tea
